Sainsbury’s staff biking for charity

A 17-YEAR-OLD supermarket worker has set himself and his Sainsbury’s colleagues the target of cycling 20 miles for Sports Relief.

Anoop Banes, from Shelley, has convinced three of his co-workers from the Ongar store to join him on the charity bike ride at the end of March.

“It took quite a lot of convincing, some of them were not that eager,” said Anoop.

The Shenfield High School student has been collecting sponsorship from friends at the school and people can also donate in-store.

“It will be interesting and it keeps you fit,” he said. “I have never done a 20-mile bike ride. It’s a target for me and I’m training for it.”

The riders will weave a 20-mile route from the Ongar store through surrounding villages before reaching the finishing point at the Sainsbury’s depot in Waltham Abbey.

The ride, which is scheduled for March 22, is just one of many fundraising activities staff will be undertaking for sports relief.

They will also be holding an inter-store football tournament, a charity darts match and a charity golf event.

Sports Relief takes place between March 23 and 25. Money raised is spent by Comic Relief to help needy people in the UK and in the world’s poorest countries.
